  10. Hi Bryan, thanks for the great theme! I’m switching my blog over to WP and have installed the theme, imported my old stuff and am now at the point of customization. I’m far from expert in CSS but can get my way around. You may laugh at my stupidity, but I can’t find in the CSS file where I change the post header color and it’s corresponding info (author, published, category, comments).

And because I’m even that more dumb, here’s another question…is there a way to put an image or masthead in replacement of the type masthead?

    thanks!

  13. hi.
    i am using megatheme 1.0.2
cool look. i want to use it, but i have some questions.
1)I can manage the look of the blog alright. but going to older entries for the first time breaks the widget-order. going further back restores it.
2)in the single-post-look there is the tags:.. line twice?
3)the Comments: line always shows none in the single post view.
since i am not very good at php i cannot change this on my own. please help.

  14. Adrienne, I spent some time doing what you want, so I hope I can save you a bit of effort by answering your questions. You can use a header image by inserting it in the header.php file — above, below, or in place of the blog name and description.

As for changing the post title color, that’s in the style.css file, almost to the end, under /* content classes */. Change the h1 color in the .article class. In that same grouping is the “extendspost” class, which I think styles the author name, categories, date, etc. (I didn’t change that on mine.)

Magatheme IS a great theme! So glad I found it! Thank you, Bryan!

  15. Hey guys, sorry about the few glitches. Here to help clean those up. Just put up a new version, let me know if that helps for you guys.

@Markus/Mike: I just liked having the tags on both ends, don’t really have a reason… you can take it out if you like in the “single.php” file.

@Marcus: Not sure how the widget order gets messed up. I’ve never seen that happen. Post a link if you can!

    Fixed:
    -The comment link on singles.

  16. I really like this theme, but this is annoying:
The search field doesn’t show up at all in e.g. Safari 4 (OS X) and Explorer 6 (the reviewers who say the theme works in IE6 must have missed this glitch?). It’s OK in Firefox and Explorer 7, but this flaw makes the theme rather useless?

  17. Just testing theme, but would like my page view without sidebars or atleast the wide, left and right ones. Can’t find a difference between post page and page page? Is there? Is it possible to take off side bars on pages and not posts? Great theme though! Truly, hope I can use it. Jules

  19. @Søren: I just checked the demo link in the post and the search field shows fine in IE6 and Safari 3. Don’t know what to tell you… :(

@Julie: Just duplicate the single.php and name it page.php. Now remove the “get_sidebar()” PHP tag in page.php. Now force the main div to a width of 940px. Enjoy!

@kat: I just added the WordPress demo link on the post.

  20. Hi Bryan,

Thanks for the theme; looks great!

I am familiar with HTML but new to PHP, CSS and WordPress. I would like to put an image just to the left of the title. I put:

in various places in the header.php file and a “red-x in a box” thingy always shows up in the top left corner. This means that (1) I don’t know if I am sourcing images correctly and (2) if I did, I don’t know how to place to the left of the title (with the title shifted a little over to accomodate).

    Could you provide a suggestion?

    Comment by pdog — February 22, 2009 @ 4:52 pm
  21. *Brian: Thanx for fast reply, but what ‘demo link’? (I didn’t provide any).
Anyway: I’ve checked right now, an my sudden suspicion was right – it’s the number of pages in the menu that’s the problem – we use 9 items, and I deleted one temporary = the search field showed up again (Safari 4, Mac)

  24. Hi Bryan:

I love the Magatheme, especially the customizable side bars!

Just one thing bothering me…links hardly show – they’re just slightly darker. I’m worried that my readers won’t recognize my links.

Could you please tell me how to change the color of them to blue (I think this is what people expect to see)

    Thanks!

  25. any chance you’ll provide any documentation for this? it’s great looking, i’m trying to use it, but even with your vague hints as to how to display an image in the title (or as the title) i can’t get it working. maybe include the code and block it out, so people just turn it on?

also hoping to decipher your comment about removing the double sidebar from single post pages, but no luck. what do i do with the page.php file i create? upload it to WP and it’ll just work?

the kind of documentation i’m talking about is the kind arun kale provides for The Morning After.

Is there any way to eliminate the post information from the fixed pages? I have several fixed pages, e.g. About, Church Finder, etc. and it’s confusing to see the post information and tags on these pages. Thanks for any suggestions. Other than this problem, I really love your theme!

    Thank you and well done!

  29. Hi Bryan, Great theme! I love the customized sidebars and footers. I have bumped into a very minor point and I’m wondering if you might have any advice. When I insert my aWeber form into a Text Widget for a sidebar, the form displays fine. However, it also displays the the table cells for the form, which does not happen within the Text Widgets for other themes. I’m not too savvy with CSS, and I’m figuring that’s what I need to adjust. If you have any advice, I’d appreciate it.

  30. Dear Bryan, I have to admit that it’s great to have this theme available since there are plenty of wp-themes bloated with unnecessary features while nice and clean theme is all we need.

Anyway, I got a few questions that you might be interesting to answer.

The wrapper width is set to 978px as opposed to 960px (the grid system)

    Why?

Is there any special reason for this?

  31. hi Bryan, i know that it might sounds silly.
my site opens nicely in IE7 but when i tried with firefox, it appears very different. i couldn’t tell what is the problem. i am very new with WP and still learning.
    Please help!

    thanx heaps

    Comment by Jeane — March 1, 2009 @ 3:17 am
  32. @Patricia: Great suggestion. I took it out in this version.

@geo: There should be no difference between the widgets in this theme and the other themes.

@wp_newbie: I didn’t use a grid system for this theme. And I used 978 simply because it’s what it worked out to. No real reason.

@Jeane: I’ve tested this in FF3, IE6, IE7 and Safari. No problems on my end. It’s user inserted content that causes problems almost every time.

    Comment by Bryan — March 1, 2009 @ 6:41 pm

  34. Hi Bryan,

I just sighned up for WP and finally found your theme after going through hundreds of others!!! Great job on clean and simple design which I like very much..

    One question,
There are informations such as “author, published, category, and comments” right next to the head line of post.
Do you think I can move those informaitions to right below the end of post?

  36. Hi Bryan
I love the theme. I took months trying to get something like it by adapting A Blog Beyond and now here’s yours with pretty much everything I need, – well, everything I need – and a really great cool, minimalist look.
Just two things: I might not need the sidebars at the footer. How do I disable those?
The thick dark bar at the top which holds the ‘Home’ button and search bar is too dark for my liking. How would i lighten that?
I know these are probably pretty basic things but it might take me a week to work out how to do it myself.
Again thanks for a really inspired and beautiful theme.
    David

    Comment by David — March 8, 2009 @ 2:47 pm
  37. @David – Thanks for the kind comments. To remove those footer sidebars, just open up footer.php with a text editor and remove the whole sidebar div from line 2 to line 21. To change the color, open style.css and replace the hex #363642 for the class .bottomnav on line 129.

    Comment by admin — March 8, 2009 @ 7:54 pm
  38. works perfectly of course. Many thanks. I wonder what you think of the lighter bottomnav band? David

  39. Is there any way to move the tag line below the post? Is there any way to get rid of or hide the 4 lines in the top right corner of each post? (Author/Published/Category/comments)

    Comment by drew — March 12, 2009 @ 10:48 pm
  40. @drew – Simply edit the appropriate PHP files with any text editor. It would help to learn a little about HTML and PHP, just do a Google on HTML tutorial or similar.

I recommend Firebug as an extension to Firefox, use it to inspect pages and search for the corresponding code in the PHP files.

  42. I really like the theme and have been playing with it a few days, teaching myself some things.

I’d prefer not to have my blog entries on the home page, but rather a blurb about our company. If I put that in a page titled “home”, I get two “home” links on the menu. Is there some way to keep two “home” menu links from showing up?

    Thanks, Mike…

I have some small questions which I have not been able to figure out:

    1. Can I change what the four lines at the top are called? Can I make them into links?

    2. Can I change the name of ‘Home’?

    3. Is there any way to show trackback ect?

    4. When I add the AddInto-plugin something happens to the theme. The Sidebars gets pushed down? Do you know what causes this? Can I fix it? Or do you know another similar plugin that workes with the theme?

  54. Great theme

I have one question though – adding a more tag or excerpt doesn’t seem to do anything. Am I doing something wrong or does this theme not support excerpts?

    Thanks,

  55. Wow, this is great! Thanks so much for a simple and elegant look without the usually associated brain damage for a non-php expert.

I made a couple of changes in five minutes, and Viola!

One thing that I would like to change, (but it’s no big deal), is the size of the Author info section. I think it’s in the extendspost area, but can’t seem to get the font smaller. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Comment by Wayne — April 4, 2009 @ 11:47 am
  56. Ok, this is a ‘Doh’ moment. Here’s how I changed the font size for the Author area, aka extendspost -

    .extendspost {color:#727288;float:right;text-align:center;list-style-type:none;margin:0 0 0 6px;border-top:1px #EDEDF3 solid;max-width:230px;min-width:180px;font-size:11px}

Note the “font-size:11px” at the end. This overrides the inherited sizing from ‘Body’.
Maybe this will help some other CSS challenged folks.

Thanks again for a really nice theme.

  57. Hi Bryan,
I’ve been trying to get rid of the tags at the bottom of every post without success. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve taken tags the line out of the single.php, which didn’t seem to do anything. I’m stumped.
What I really want is get ALL the bottom tags gone anyway.

No biggie, but now that I can’t figure it out I’m on a mission. :)

    Comment by Wayne — April 4, 2009 @ 9:06 pm
  58. @Wayne, one thing I would be careful about is if you have a Cache plugin, this will simply cache the old version. You’re on the right track, just make sure you’re pulling out the tag line < p class = " tags " >

    Comment by Bryan — April 5, 2009 @ 11:36 pm
  59. Bryan,

I screwed something up good :) I have spent days working on your wonderful template & have so much just the way I want it. However, I just did something to cause all of the sidebars to drop below the comments and the 3 footers also end up in a vertical line below the sidebars. This does not happen on the main page but only on the single post page. I think everything was fine until I tried removing the upper tags. I didn’t want them both above & below the post. I tried putting it back the way it was, but that didn’t solve the problem. The upper tags are gone but only from the post page. If you need to see what I mean, I can direct you to my test blog although I would prefer it’s not public. I would very much appreciate your help. I was almost where i wanted to be and hope I don’t have to start over. Thanks.

I see no problem with getting to 2 months with this theme, not one problem what so ever with the coding and customization.

Will be jumping soon to Pro, need to get this header thing to work, so I know what I am doing going forward.

again, thanks for the no-frills and NO SCRIPT ERROR theme!!! :)

  62. Bryan… is it possible that I’m the only person to have installed this theme who has severe font issues with Internet Explorer? I use a Macintosh with Firefox & Safari and the styles all display properly on both. But the person I built the blog for (see my website link) was sending me screenshots of horribly oversized h1 headlines and body copy. I had to change every tag that controlled fonts for the different blog elements (basically inserting a font-size tag) and it was quite tedious. I notice that nobody else mentioned this as a problem so wondering if you have any insight.

  64. Hi, Bryan. Thanks for this great theme, which I chose over many other candidates. Quick question for you: I somehow hadn’t noticed until today that an update was released on Feb. 27th, and I plumb can’t remember now what if any modifications I might have made. I am therefor worried that upgrading Magatheme will lead to unwanted changes in my blog’s appearance.

I am using 1.0.2; are there any release notes available for 1.0.4? Or would you be so kind as to let me know what the update changed—so that I can decide whether I am able to live without it? Thanks bunches.

    Comment by Skye Nathaniel — May 28, 2009 @ 3:19 pm
  65. Is this theme released under the GPL? It doesn’t have any licensing information, but I assume it is because it is listed in the WordPress theme directory. But the fact that you have a “Pro” package for it makes me suspect that it is not. I am considering using it for a presentation I’m creating for WordCamp, but I need it to be GPL for that.

    Comment by Randy — June 16, 2009 @ 2:05 pm
  66. Ha — I just saw the GPL notice in the footer after posting the comment! What about Magatheme Pro? I see that the Pro Package doesn’t say you can use it for other projects, so I wonder if that means that neither package is GPL.

    Comment by Randy — June 16, 2009 @ 2:09 pm
  67. Well Randy, technically both themes are under the GPL, and derivative works on GPL software (like WordPress) are automatically GPL. So go crazy! The Pro package really means to state that there is no explicit support for multiple sites.

I’ve had to reword gazellethemes.com upon learning this, but I may have missed some wording. If you can point me to where you read that, that would be awesome.

Basically, the Pro version affords you access to the support and customization forum and a bunch of neat little features I threw in on top of it, all considered GPL (but not freely available, if that makes sense (you can sell GPL software)).

    Comment by Bryan — June 17, 2009 @ 12:47 am
  68. Excellent. I will be speaking at WordCamp Dallas next weekend [http://dallas.wordcamp.org/schedule/randy-hoyt/], and I will be using Magatheme as the base for the demo blog I’ll be building.

Mouse over the big orange buttons on [this page](http://www.gazellethemes.com/magatheme-minimal-magazine-theme-for-wordpress/): the hover text for the Dev package says that you can use it as the base of projects, while the Pro package says nothing about it. It makes it sound like you can’t use the Pro package as the base of projects — since GPL software has no such limit on use, I assumed it wasn’t GPL.

I certainly understand that “open source” doesn’t mean “free as in beer”. I’m excited to see more theme authors offering premium, GPL themes. It looks like Magatheme is your first one. Is that right? Do you have more in the works?

  69. Randy, thanks for pointing that out. I’ll try and clarify the wording. If you’d like a copy of the Pro version to demo as well, let me know. I have a few more in the works, been busy with more traditional jobs and preparing to teach this coming semester.

  72. Excellent theme that I am grateful I came across Bryan! When using the tag and I list more than 9 items, when you look at the page the items starting number 10, 11, 12, etc. …the first digit, the “1″, is not being displayed correctly. It looks like only half of the width of the “1″ is shown.

Is there a little tweaking required here? I am familiar with HTML & CSS so I do not mind making any necessary changes Bryan. Please advise.

  73. Hi Bryan, I recently downloaded your theme and am using it for my website. It was working great until today. For some reason on the home page, the sidebar shifts to the bottom. Using IE6 to view. Not sure if it works in other browsers.
I tried changing the width of sidebars .sidebar2 and .sidebar3 but this has not helped.
    The sidebars work on page
    http://www.dainee.com/page/2
    but not on page
    http://www.dainee.com/page/1
they also work within a post.
    Any feedback much appreciated..

  79. Hello!
I love this theme and that’s the one I’m using right now.
But I’m having some problems… I’d like to change de 404 page error. I copied the default one (404.php) and it seems I can edit it but at the end nothing happens.
For example: http://www.ariaddna.com/goodmorningstranger/error (it seems it doesn’t found any 404 page)
It just work when you search something that doesn’t exist: http://www.ariaddna.com/goodmorningstranger/index.php?s=dsaa
I’ve checked out yours and for you it works!: http://bryanhelmig.com/error

    Could you please help me?
    Thank you :)

    Comment by Stacey — October 25, 2009 @ 5:37 pm
  83. If the theme does not have those files, it is using the index.php for that. Simply create a copy of the index.php file and call it category.php. The theme will then use the category.php file automatically, and then you can tweak it for the category pages.

  86. Ok – custom image header. Everyone is saying it’s easy, but I’ve spent three months trying to figure it out. I came up with an acceptable fix, but it bugs me to no end that it’s not quite what I want in my header. HOW do I put a custom image into the header.php file for this theme???

  87. Hello Bryan:

Did a HTML Validator check at w3c.org and your theme had some errors, which center mostly around the comments.php file. It is the phrase tabindex=”1″ aria-required=’true’ that is causing the problem here. Something to the effect about some Strict coding used in a Transitional document, whatever that means.

Also when I opened up the comments what does this line from the comments.php file that I am pasting here suppose to mean: die (‘Please do not load this page directly. Thanks!’)

Please advise on what needs to be done to correct the errors.

  88. Thank you Brian, for this great theme! But I have a little problem. The preset ‘home’ link doesnt seem to work, and so I made another ‘home’ link, and now I have two of them. How do I get rid of the first one?
I found this theme after a whole day looking for appropriate ones, and yours was the best.

    Thanks again.

  89. Hi.
I installed your Magatheme 1.0.4 and have been making some adjustments to it. The thing is that yesterday I spent 2h modifying it and all of a sudden I get “the requested theme doesn’t exist” so I installed it again and went to bed. I tried to modify it again today and got the same error from the start.
What to do? Please help, I’m aiming for a January 1st launch :O

  107. The first tab seems to display the most recent post too, even when a completely other category is called. I use the pro version. Do you have a fix for this.
The interesting is that when I fiddle around with the slider the extra post(s) will be gone.

If you have any ideas on how to solve this problem I would appreciate that.

    Awesome theme btw.

  108. Bryan, I think the footer does not link to your site for the latest WordPress version. Am I correct? I want to verify because the footer credit seems to have disappeared from my blog and I’m not sure if I have messed things up or if it is the new WordPress version to blame.

  115. @Wayne, one thing I would be careful about is if you have a Cache plugin, this will simply cache the old version. You’re on the right track, just make sure you’re pulling out the tag line
