Don’t beat yourself too much guys. A lot of trickery was used formulating these questions.
1. Numbers are very suggestive, lots of 1s.
It is much easier to answer correctly if question is constructed this way: “A bat and a ball cost $9.00 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?”
You can only get the answer when you do the math right.
You can also write it like this (a=cost of a ball) 9=a+a+1

2. You’re reading this :”If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets,..” and you start thinking “what the heck are the widgets, and how do they look like?”. Your attention and concentration is taken away from doing math to thinking about damn widgets. So, 5 machines, 5 minutes, 5 widgets each=25 Hmmm, I don’t remember seeing widgets ever.
We are already on wrong way, lol.
Fewer people would made a mistake if question was formulated like this:”All 5 machines in 5 minutes made 5 balls in total.”

3. Lots of suggestive doubling and halving, times 2 or divided by 2.
Try this one: “In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch grows by 1/10th. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?”
This is none suggestive and you have to do the proper math to answer it.

Wow, I finished high school, have had 2 yrs of college, and a nursing degree, and taught in a middle school, worked in a law firm for 20 yrs, am 70 yrs old and I missed all of them, plus after explanations – I still don’t get them.

I guess it’s a language thing then,because if I got a ball for 10 cents and a bat for 1 dollar it totals 1.10 cents and the bat costs 1 dollar more than the ball and no algebra gonna make that ball cost 0.5 cents.
